How Can You Help the Berwick Community Garden Succeed?
Do you have skills that could help the Berwick Community Garden grow? Some opportunities havenothing to do with gardening—and that’s OK. Others are all about getting your hands in the soil.However you contribute, you’ll be helping strengthen a vital community resource.
Remember … it takes a village.

Volunteer Opportunities

We offer a wide range of ways to get involved, from outreach and leadership to hands-on gardenwork. Whether you have an hour a month or time to volunteer regularly, there’s a place for you here.
General Volunteering

Community Ambassadors – Represent the garden at farmers’ markets and community events through outreach and tabling.

Community Educators – Share your skills by helping plan and lead workshops, offered online, in person, or both.

Garden Builders – Support the garden infrastructure projects such as carpentry, erecting trellises, moving soil, spreading mulch, and general construction.

Greeters & Tour Guides – Welcome visitors during open garden days and help orient new gardeners.

Childcare Helpers – Provide supervision and support for children during new gardener orientations and community events.

Fundraising – Help raise the funds needed to build, maintain the garden, and expand the garden’s programs.

Foodshare Distributing – Become a host/helper at a weekly foodshare market style distribution.

Leadership Team Members – Join our Leadership Team and help guide the vision and direction of the garden.

Event Planners – Assist with planning fundraising, educational programs, and events throughout the year.

Writers – Help tell our story through newsletters, blog posts, website content, video scripts, and public service announcements.

Graphic Designers & Artists – Bring creativity to our communications and help our brand come alive through visual storytelling.

Data Entry – Help track data and document the impact of our work.

Social Media – Share updates, photos, and stories to help spread the word about what’s happening in the garden.

Board of Directors – Interested in a more formal leadership role? Contact us to learn about serving on our Board.

Produce Delivery Drivers – Deliver harvested produce to Table of Plenty at the Methodist Church and the House of Hope kitchen.

Flyer Distribution – Help post flyers around Berwick and nearby communities using a provided location list.

Logistics Assistants – Help setup for events and cleanup afterwards.
Gardening Opportunities

Love gardening—or want to learn? We’ll match you with tasks you enjoy, whether that’s planting, harvesting, or behind-the-scenes garden care.

Garden Mentors – Support and guide new BCG gardeners.

Deadheading – Help keep plants healthy and flowering throughout the season.

Planting & Sowing the Foodshare Beds – Participate in planting for steady food production.
-
Harvesting – Harvest produce on scheduled days, typically completed before 10 a.m. so food can be delivered by mid-day.

Trimming & Inspecting – Assist with daily plant health checks and light pruning to prevent disease and stress.

Pruning – Help prune fruit trees and shrubs in spring and fall; training is provided.

Mulching Pathways – Maintain pathways by spreading mulch in high-traffic areas.

Composting – Turn compost and learn the science behind building healthy soil.

Weeding – Support ongoing garden maintenance to keep beds productive.

Transplanting Seedlings – Assist with succession planting in the Sharing the Harvest beds to maintain continuous production.

Preparing Garden Beds – Lay out square-foot gardening grids and prepare beds for planting.

Pollinator Plantings – Create and maintain perennial pollinator beds, including dividing plants as needed.

Seed Saving – Help collect, store, and share seeds for future growing seasons; training provided.

Tool Maintenance – Assist with cleaning, sharpening, and caring for garden tools.

Bug Hunting/Citizen Scientist – Learn about beneficial and non-beneficial bugs and help maintain a healthy garden environment.
